House in Lorne

2021, M.Arch Year 1

The client desired a focus on sustainability and an eco-friendly home. The scheme has thus been designed to minimise the use of concrete, swapping concrete for hempcrete where possible, utilising rammed earth to minimise material transport emissions, and swapping steel beams for glulam timber. Smart technology utilised to integrate the house with the emerging 'smart' energy (national) grid, which, if adopted by homes widely, could smooth out the peaks and troughs of electricity demand, helping to enable a wholesale switch to renewable energy across the grid.

The site is also set within particularly beautiful landscape, and views out to sea were prioritised in the design. The site is also in an area prone to bushfires, and materials & construction techniques have been selected carefully to help alleviate bushfire risk.
