Camberside Housing
2021, M.Arch Year 1
This scheme has been designed to address issues facing living & working in 2021 and beyond. In a post-covid world, will the way we work and live change; will remote working continue; will people still own private cars; and can what can we do to help alleviate the persistent housing crisis in the UK?
The Camberside Housing scheme aims to address these issues and be a forward-thinking development for the future. The project offers a ‘Barcelona’ style block, wherein all the basic necessities of life can be found within a few feet:
-
a childcare centre for working families;
-
a grocery shop for life’s essentials;
-
green, open space and allotments for connecting with nature and exercise;
-
and a large co-working studio for remote workers to reduce social isolation from working from home and cut down on carbon emissions from wasteful commutes
The scheme is excellently located on the waterfront in Portsmouth, and connects Old Portsmouth, to the South, with the new - Gunwharf Quays to the North. It boasts excellent transport links, with Portsmouth Harbour train station and the city’s bus interchange a few minutes walk away, as well as beautiful water views.
The scheme proposes to:
-
Maximise residential density while providing liveable, healthy spaces to live - including for families
-
Provide good public and semi-public green spaces, including exercise spaces and allotments
-
Give space for a retail unit that is slightly larger than a standard convenience store
-
Provide a large co-working studio and safe childcare facilities for residents & non-residents
-
Prioritise water views as much as possible, and complete the Millennium Walk
